What Is Clove Tea Good For?
Clove tea has been enjoyed for centuries, and for good reason! Thanks to the many health benefits of cloves, people drink it for all kinds of reasons. Some people drink it to help with digestion, others to boost immune health, and many use it to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels!
But for us women with PCOS? That’s where things get really exciting. Cinnamon and clove tea may also help support some of the underlying hormone and metabolic imbalances behind PCOS. Here’s how:
Health Benefits of Clove Tea
Clove tea offers much more than its warm, comforting flavor. It’s naturally rich in antioxidants, including a powerful plant compound called eugenol (clove oil.), which is responsible for many of the health benefits of cloves. Antioxidants help protect your body from something called free radicals. These are unstable molecules that can damage healthy cells and contribute to oxidative stress!
Reducing oxidative stress is really important for staying healthy as you age and feeling your best overall. A diet rich in antioxidants may help lower the risk of certain chronic diseases, like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Of course, clove tea isn’t a treatment or cure for these conditions (or any condition), it’s an easy way to give your body a little boost of protective plant compounds.
Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the specific health benefits clove tea may offer.
Clove Tea and Blood Sugar
Healthy blood sugar is important for everyone because it helps support steady energy, a healthy metabolism, and balanced hormones. Some research suggests that the beneficial compounds in cloves may help support healthy glucose metabolism and normal insulin function.
Supports Your Immune System
Cloves have long been used in traditional wellness practices because they naturally contain anti-inflammatory constituents. Eugenol in cloves, one of the key active compounds in the spice, has been shown in studies to help strengthen the body’s natural defenses against things like harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and free radicals. Even small amounts may have a big impact over time.
Aids in Health Digestion
People have been drinking clove water and clove tea for generations as one of nature’s favorite natural remedies for digestive issues. Ground cloves may help soothe occasional bloating, support healthy digestion, and ease mild stomach discomfort. Some research also suggests that the beneficial compounds in cloves may help stimulate digestive enzymes, allowing your body to break down food more efficiently! It’s an easy way to keep these moving with few (if any) side effects!

Clove Tea Benefits for Women, Including PCOS
Improves Insulin Sensitivity
Up to 80% of women with PCOS struggle with insulin resistance meaning your body has a tough time processing glucose and keeping blood sugar levels stable. Instead of converting that glucose into energy, your body holds onto it, storing it as fat and absorbing it into the bloodstream. And you know what that means… stubborn weight gain, energy crashes, and even elevated androgen levels, throwing more hormones out of whack.
But, here’s the good news: cinnamon and cloves are super helpful for combating insulin resistance. Studies show that this powerhouse spice can help improve insulin sensitivity, making it easier for your body to regulate blood sugar levels. When blood sugar is stable, the risk of weight gain and diabetes two major concerns for women with PCOS goes way down.
Regulates Menstrual Cycle
If you have PCOS, one of your symptoms might be irregular periods with missed ovulation. In fact, some Cysters go months without a period, which can make things super frustrating especially if you’re trying to conceive, avoid cysts, or ease a number of PCOS symptoms. But, here’s the exciting part: cinnamon and clove tea might just be one of the secret weapons your cycle needs!
By supporting healthy androgen levels (those male hormones that throw off your cycle) and promoting insulin sensitivity, this powerful tea may help restore ovulation and promote more regular menstrual cycles. And, when your hormones are in harmony, everything else like energy levels, mood, and even skin health starts falling into place.
Reduces Inflammation
Oxidative stress and inflammation are two major culprits behind so many frustrating PCOS symptoms such as weight gain, acne, and hormone imbalances that just won’t quit. The good news? Cloves and cinnamon are packed with powerful antioxidants that can help fight back!
Cloves are loaded with eugenol and vitamin C, two incredible compounds that reduce inflammation and protect your cells from damage. And let’s talk about cinnamon this spice isn’t just delicious; it also has potent anti-inflammatory effects that support metabolic health and help combat chronic low-grade inflammation (a common type of PCOS).
Lowers Androgens
One of the biggest hormone imbalances women with PCOS experience? Elevated androgens especially testosterone. When those levels are too high, they can bring on some seriously frustrating symptoms like acne, hair loss, and excess hair growth (AKA hirsutism). Not exactly fun.
But, here’s where clove and cinnamon trees come in! The spices from these trees have been shown to help lower androgen levels. This could help reduce breakouts, slow unwanted hair growth, and even prevent ovarian cysts. It’s just one more reason a warm cup of cinnamon and clove tea might be your new go-to for managing PCOS symptoms!
Are There Side Effects of Clove Tea?
For most people, clove tea is safe to enjoy in moderation with few, if any, side effects. However, it could potentially interact with certain medications. This includes blood thinners and diabetes medications, so check with your doctor before drinking it regularly if you take either!
One important note: clove oil is much more concentrated than clove tea. NEVER swallow it undiluted and talk to your doctor before taking it for proper dosage and use.

How to Make Cinnamon and Clove Tea for PCOS
Ingredients
- 1 cinnamon stick (or ½ tsp ground cinnamon)
- 2-3 cloves
- 1-2 cups water
- Optional: small amount of lemon, ginger, or honey
Note: Look for ceylon cinnamon instead of cassia cinnamon. Ceylon contains much lower levels of coumarin, making it a better choice for regular, long-term use.
Instructions
Step 1: Boil water.
Using an electric or stove-top tea kettle, boil water until it reaches 212℉.
Step 2: Add cinnamon stick and cloves
Add the cinnamon stick and cloves to the boiled water. Cover and allow to steep for 3-5 minutes to get the best flavor and extract all those beneficial compounds.
Step 3: Strain and drink warm.
Strain the cinnamon stick and cloves and pour your freshly brewed tea into your favorite mug. Sip and enjoy the awesome health benefits of cinnamon and clove tea for PCOS!
Step 4: (Bonus!) Pour over ice.
If you want to create an iced tea version of your clove and cinnamon tea, simply allow the tea to cool and pour over ice.
