Complete PCOS Grocery List for Weight Loss and Hormone Health

complete pcos grocery list for weight loss and hormone health

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine condition affecting 13% of women of reproductive age and no two cases are exactly alike! PCOS triggers a variety of symptoms that leave Cysters feeling chronically unwell, and one of the most common root issues is insulin resistance.

In fact, up to 80% of women with PCOS experience it, which means their bodies struggle to regulate blood sugar levels properly. This can lead to PCOS symptoms including weight gain, fatigue, irregular periods, and relentless cravings. While there’s no medical cure for PCOS, managing symptoms and reducing insulin resistance through a healthy diet can make a world of difference.

If you’re living with PCOS, your symptoms may improve with a few lifestyle changes. I recommend focusing on an anti-inflammatory, gluten- and dairy-free diet rich in whole foods and lean proteins to help regulate hormones and improve insulin sensitivity. I know starting a new diet can feel overwhelming especially when you’re figuring out what works for your unique body. That’s why I’ve created a complete shopping list of PCOS-friendly foods to make your next grocery trip a breeze!

how does diet affect pcos

How Does Diet Affect PCOS?

With every type of food you consume, it affects different processes in your body. So, choosing PCOS-friendly foods that are rich in nutrients can make ALL the difference.

Your diet has a direct impact on the underlying issues of PCOS, like insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and inflammation. Filling your plate with nutrient-dense, PCOS-friendly foods can help you tackle these symptoms head-on promoting weight loss, improving gut health, supporting ovulation and fertility, regulating your mood, and more!

So, how exactly does your diet affect PCOS? For those with insulin resistance, eating high-glycemic index (GI) foods can spike blood sugar levels, leading to excess insulin production. And, since many PCOS bodies don’t process glucose into energy properly, and instead absorb it into the bloodstream and store it as fat, eating excess sugars can be problematic. The high insulin levels can then trigger an overproduction of androgens (male hormones like testosterone), which can cause irregular periods, acne, and unwanted hair growth on the face and body.

Another big culprit? Inflammation. Processed foods, trans fats, and sugary treats can fuel inflammation, leading to weight gain, menstrual cycle disruption, and even worse insulin resistance. And if your diet is missing healthy fats and antioxidants, it can interfere with natural bodily functions and chemical processes like ovulation, something many Cysters already find challenging.

Every bit you take affects your body, which is why choosing PCOS-friendly, nutrient-packed foods can make ALL the difference in managing your symptoms and supporting your health.
